Royal Theatre Carré is proud to announce that it will present in January 2026 the world premiere of the renewed version of The Last Ship, the acclaimed musical by music icon Sting. The global superstar will play a leading role in this special production, which will be performed in the Netherlands exclusively at Carré for a limited run. The Last Ship is part of Broadway in Carré, Carré’s successful series of original English-language top musicals from Broadway and West End.

“The intensity with which Sting approaches this project is extraordinary. His artistic choices are deeply personal and considered – it shows in every step of the process.” – Madeleine van der Zwaan, managing director, Royal Theatre Carré

During a special event this afternoon at Royal Theatre Carré, Sting gave a personal introduction to his musical The Last Ship. He performed several songs live and talked about the meaning of the piece.

“I literally grew up in the shadow of the shipyard,” says Sting. “I dreamed of escaping – and I did. But later I realized I had to give something back. The Last Ship is my tribute to the people and the place that shaped me.”

About The Last Ship – A unique production

Inspired by Sting’s childhood in the British town of Wallsend, The Last Ship tells the poignant story of a community facing the loss of its shipyard – the heart of its existence. In a world where past and future collide, themes of loss, pride, and solidarity resound. Sting stars in a lead role, adding a powerful emotional dimension to this version.

The renewed staging includes new scenes and music, specially adapted for this production. Sting’s music – from gritty folk and rousing choruses to intimate ballads – forms the beating heart of the show. Familiar songs such as Island of Souls, All This Time, and When We Dance are woven into the performance.

The show will be performed in English. More information about the cast, creatives, and direction will be announced later.

The original Broadway production was nominated for two Tony Awards: Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.

Broadway in Carré

With The Last Ship, Carré continues its ambitious Broadway in Carré series, bringing original English-language top musicals to the Netherlands. Previous titles includes Pippin, Sunset Boulevard, The Book of Mormon, and – this summer – Hadestown. Never before has a composer in this series taken the stage themselves.
